Year 8 Food and Textiles

In year 8 there are lots of opportunities to develop skills and work independently.


Year 8 have been looking at target markets in relation to pizzas. They have researched target markets such as luxury or gluten free and made presentations, including recipes. For their practical work they were given the target market of a child's party and worked collaboratively to produce it. 


Worldwide meals

Year 8 have been developing their skills by cooking a range of recipes from different countries and cultures. 

Potato and pea curry


1 tin of potatoes

½ cup frozen peas

1 onion

2 cloves of garlic

1 tspn cumin seeds

¼ tspn red chilli powder

½ tspn turmeric powder

1 tspn coriander powder

sunflower oil



  1. Finely chop the onion and cut the potatoes into small cubes.
  2. Peel and crush the garlic
  3. Heat a tablespoon of oil in the pan and add 1 tsp of cumin seeds.
  4. Add the onions and stir occasionally until the onions are soft.
  5. Add the cubed potatoes, garlic and peas and all the spices.
  6. Gently stir the whole mixture thoroughly and cover with the lid.
  7. Stir every  couple of minutes until cooked

Tie dye

Year 8 created beautiful effects using tie dye. They then turned their fabric into a useful article that had a zip. This involved making templates, cutting fabric accurately and inserting a zip. Some children chose to decorate theirs using the CAM embroidery machine.
