English is central to all other areas of the curriculum. It is our aim to develop the skill of self expression and to foster enjoyment and understanding of all aspects of literature and media.
Pupils are taught to recognise that audience, purpose and therefore style are important. Research skills are taught to aid work in other curriculum areas and promote independent learning. Reading for pleasure is also important. The ability to express oneself successfully, to understand the meaning of language and culture, both our own and that of others, is an ongoing process which hopefully will continue all our lives.
Tom's Midnight Garden was a brilliant performance by Image Musical Theatre. The actors, Simon, Rachel and Nathan, pulled off a great show with simple yet appealing scenery and an intriguing plot.
The play, adapted from the novel by Philippa Pearce, was about a boy called Tom (played by Nathan) whose brother has the measles. Tom goes to live with his aunt hisUncle Alan and Aunt Gwen in quarantine. He is really bored one day and discovers a door to a garden. the clock strikes thirteen and Tom travels back in time from the 1950s to the 1890s. He is invisible to everyone apart from a young girl named Hattie.
The actors all sang in the play and it really added to the performance. 8 out of 12 people liked the singing in the play. I would highly recommend this play to people aged 8 and over as the story is brilliant yet quite complicated.
Tom's Midnight Garden is a fantastically clever play because of its time travelling antics. It is set in the 1950s about a twelve(ish) year old boy called Tom. The atmosphere changes from sad to silly to happy and even funny. The play starts simply but gets much more complex with the time travels.
As soon as the play starts,you feel as if you are really in the scene. As you progress, it got to the stage where only a few could understand it. Even though it was a good play, the scene changes could have been better.
As the play nears theend, it becomes sad and you really realise what it means to be alive!
The play was originally a book by Philippa Pearce but the play changes it quite a bit because it is a musical. The official rating for the music and singing was 2 out of 3 stars. I would personally recommend this stunning show for all ages.
The Hancock Museum was an extraordinary experience, and seeing all the ancient artefacts was brilliant. Once we got there, we stood in a line in our groups and put our belongings in a blue bin.
So imagine an elephant, a lion, a scorpion, polar bears, Egyptians, and Romans. Well, I saw it all in one day! We were in the Living Planet area and we found a baby seal, which we used as the head of our chimera ( a made up animal made of different parts of other animals) for the Greek myth we planned out.
Sophie Churchill said," I thought the living planet was amazing and baby seal was adorable. I wish I could have taken them home!"
We loved the Hancock Museum and thought it was amazingly great.
This was the trip that year 5 took to the Hancock Museum. We went to find out about history and science. Romans, Greeks, Egyptians and even Hadrian's wall( which went from one side a the massive room to another!)
We travelled from West Monkseaton to the Haymarket ( which was thirteen stops!) nearly everyone was scared of the gigantic escalators. We walked about 300 years from the Haymarket to the Hancock and the first thing my group saw were the crystals and gems.
Lily Bushby quoted that she thought the crystals and gems were amazing and would have liked to touch them.

The next sight we saw was Hadrian's Walll, which went from one side of the room all the way to the other. After visiting Hadrian's wall, they visited the living planet where there was an adorable baby seal.
Once we had seen the Living Planet, we had our lunch which was delicious.
As the cobalt blue icicles,

Winter, winter, what have you done?
The thick silver snow is a huge white blanket covering the ground,
The cold blue lake is a dark blue stain on a patch of white snow. Snow floats elegantly and slowly to the earth,
Trees are like tall, still snowmen towering over me,
The ice cold icicles hang from the trees like frozen bats.
Snow has painted the world in a thick silvery blanket,
The trees' bare fingers scrape snow off the ground.
Frosty branches wave at me from above,
Ice wind screams through the night,
The frozen lake was like an ice rink,
Snowflakes are crystals falling from the sky.
Trees were like frozen skeletons, icicles hung from the frosty branches
The snow was like a perishing white blanket,
Covering the earth below me.
Fences freeze over in the frosty air,
Flowers disappear under the white carpet.
A white carpet spreads over the town,
The delicate diamond sticks dangle down from the trees.
The kids came out to play in this wonderland.
Snowflakes, all different shapes, fall from the heavens,
And the river gleams as it turns to ice.
The trees whisper to the wind,
The families keep warm inside,
The cars battle in the snow and
As the sun comes out,
The snow begins to melt.
